Berry Pomeroy

We took a drive out to Berry Pomeroy, near Totnes this morning to see the English Heritage  castle.  There is a long, very narrow road, with occasional passing places, to approach the castle, but although a bit nerve wracking, it is worth the trip.  We found it a little easier leaving the place by going in the opposite direction, i.e. through the village.

The place, as a lot of English Heritage sites, is a well maintained ruin dating from the 15th century.  The original castle dates from the 11th century.   Unfortunately the cafe was closed as off season  but there are loos available. 

It was very interesting walking round; there are audio guides available with WiFi points scattered at strategic points that explain the history of the buildings. 

Later, on return to Teignmouth, we went to The View on the seafront for coffee.

Berry Pomeroy Castle, a Tudor mansion within the walls of an earlier castle, is near the village of Berry Pomeroy, in South Devon, England. It was built in the late 15th century by the Pomeroy family which had held the land since the 11th century. By 1547 the family was in financial difficulties and sold the lands to Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset. Apart from a short period of forfeit to the Crown after Edward's execution, the castle has remained in the Seymour family ever since, although it was abandoned in the late 17th century when the fourth baronet moved to Wiltshire.
