Modern Art Gallery - Cauldron Burial Ground
It was a lovely sunny day for a walk although temperatures are now in single figures. M and I headed down to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art where we planned to join the Water of Leith path along to Roseburn Park.
'Mod One' is a neo classical building designed by William Burn in 1825. Formerly the John Watson's School, an institute for fatherless children, closed in 1975. The National Galleries of Scotland acquired the building in 1984 and it now houses the Modern One Art Gallery.
Behind the gallery is a tiny cemetery known as the Cauldron Burial Ground. There's a headstone showing the names of twelve children who died between 1820 and 1888. Apparently the area had become overgrown and forgotten until discovered when work began on the gallery.
