Tongland Power Station
Today's the day ....................... to wrap up
This is how the Tongland Hydro Electric Power Station, just up the road from us, is looking at the moment.
It's in the middle of a multi-million pound refurbishment by the owners - Drax - that will take a couple of years to complete. The problem has been that it was constructed back in the 1930s using concrete reinforced with some sort of metal, which has corroded badly. The only way to repair it, is to cover the entire building with a sort of plastic casing - and then to sandblast it or to treat it in some way that will reverse the damage. That's why it looks like a gigantic birthday present - all wrapped up. Hopefully though, it will look even better than it used to in due course.
Something else that is all wrapped up, but consigned to the past for ever(!) is the result of the Quarter Final Rugby Union World Cup match - Wales v Argentina - that we've just watched. We're hoping that the Ireland v New Zealand match in an hour or so will be a bit more inspiring ..........................?!
