Stairway to Heaven

The Thomas Ridgeway memorial in the old Torre Parish Church, Torquay.  With handy ladder. Formerly it was called St Saviours, the Parish Church of Tormohun.
This was declared redundant by the Church Authorities in the 1960s and is now the Greek Orthodox Church of St Andrew.(see extra)  Said to have been built in the 14th century, on the site of an earlier Norman chapel, the parish was part of the property of Torre Abbey until the dissolutionment of the Abbeys in 1539 but much renovated in 1849 and enlarged in 1874.
The Churchyard has a Cholera Corner, Old (Ancient) Well, Memorials from three wars and some very old graves.

There was an open day today which was very interesting. Today was the saint’s day of Saint Paraskeva (Friday) of the Balkans. Not sure what the Friday means.
Many of the 690 gravestones are of 19th century visitors to the town. Torquay was seen as a refuge from the industrial areas, particularly for those suffering from consumption, which unfortunately eventually led to their demise.
