Crochet has morphed from homespun to hot

I've been thinking about crochet for a while. I know the principles, can do a chain and a single crochet but I'm not sure about the rest.

So, on days like these, Youtube is my friend.
Unfortunately, I didn't pick the best day to start. It was hot and I already had a sore neck so after this glorious beginning it all went a bit wrong.
Project postponed until full health has been restored.

I'm hoping to make some kind of blanket or throw.
I'm also hoping to have made it by Christmas!
