The Henge
We have had a busy old day in Wiltshire. We are very glad that we left for Stonehenge soon after breakfast as, by the time we returned to the carpark from a wander amongst the barrows, the coach parties had arrived and it was heaving with no chance of a tourist free blip!
En route to Stonehenge we took a look at Woodhenge.Obviously being built of wood it has not survived the ages but it was interesting to look at the posts which recreate its shape and to read something of its possible purpose.
After the Hengefest we drove to Salisbury and had some lunch then explored the market town, calling briefly at the Cathedral. Then we continued to Andover and a trip down memory lane for Tony. We turned off at Barton Stacy to see what was left of the camp where he was stationed in the Army some forty years ago, to discover that it is now a very pretty piece of woodland surrounded by barbed wire fences and MOD keep out signs. Hardly a trace of the camp left bar a few overgrown roads.
A final call in at the Wilton Windmill (look at the weather now!) and then back to the B &B. walking day tomorrow!
Stonehenge stuff!
