Barrow
It was good to leave the car behind today and walk. Our B & B is just a few miles away from Avebury which is a world heritage site. The area is riddled with Neolithic remains: the Avebury Henge; standing stones; green ways and barrows. Tony planned a route for us which took in all of the sites, including the hillside where the Sarsen stones were originally quarried and Windmill Hill which was excavated by the 'Marmalade King' Keiller who discovered a vast array of artefacts.
On our walk back down the hill on the track to Avebury I blipped this of a barrow on the horizon. This view pretty much represents what we were walking through for several hours today, lovely!
On the way up Windmill Hill we passed through a beautiful meadow and Tony counted almost twenty different wildflowers: buttercup, pink vetch, tufted vetch, buglos, lesser plantain, knapweed, ox eye daisy, daisy, red & white clover, birds foot trefoil, stitch wort, pignut, cow parsley, cowslip, bladder campion, thistle.
