This is Craigmillar Castle near the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary which is built in Little France so named after the area where Mary Queen of Scots’ French retinues stayed when the queen preferred to stay at Craigmillar instead of Edinburgh Castle. Two better photos of the castle are here and here with the views that can now be seen from the castle. I am including some that I took last week in Edinburgh Castle connected to Mary.
The first is a cast from her tomb in Westminster Abbey and the tiny room in the castle is where she gave birth to her son who became James VI of Scotland and James I of England. During her long 19 year imprisonment in England, Mary had plenty of time to sew. Here examples of her work have been exactly replicated by 33 volunteers using authentic materials and techniques to make these embroideries which are largely inspired by nature and mythology.
