A Moorland Memorial

We were on Hameldown today on Dartmoor. It was rainy and misty.  On Remembrance Day for many years we have walked to this moorland memorial at 1570 feet above sea level,  and observed the silence at 11 am. This commemorates the aircrew who died when their Hampden bomber crashed in the mist at 10.50pm on Friday, 21 March 1941.
The crew who died were
Pilot Officer Robert David Wilson
Sergeant Richard Leonard Ashburton Ellis
Sergeant Ronald Brames
Sergeant Charles John Lyon
All were twenty five and under.
They were returning to RAF Scampton from a mission to bomb the U-Boat base at Lorient.
As well as our small group of walkers there were four others present.
