Rain,rain,go to Spain....
What a morning. From the sunny day yesterday it has changed to a p...ing wet morning. When I went round to feed all the cattle it literally couldn't have rained any harder. Was on my second dry coat and third dry hat by 9 am.
Back in and loaded up the 4 heifers and 1 cull cow for the mart and headed off to St Boswells. Was a horrible drive with lots of big puddles, but got there eventually.
A quick wash out of the trailer, and even quicker visit to the canteen, then headed round to my mechanic pal's to get him to fix a puncture in my landrover. A quick coffee, then headed back up the road via a dairy farm to collect a calf to twin on to a cow which calved during the night and had a dead calf. Had just skinned the dead calf and fitted the new calf with its overcoat when wee brother phoned needing a hand to calve a cow. It was a big limousin calf out a Belgian blue cow ,never a good mix. By the time we got her calved the calf only lived for a few minutes before deciding to die. Then there was another cow in the shed with 2 feet poking out,so got her into the crush and calved her. Better luck this time,a healthy live calf and mummy on her feet.
Left them to it and headed home to feed cattle here.
Emptied the rain gauge tonight, 57 mm since this morning. That's over 2 inches in old money,or as Tony Hancock would say, that's nearly an arm full !
