Tongland Old Bridge
Today's the day ……………………. to cross the river
Just a bit upstream from where we are on the River Dee, is Tongland Old Bridge. The extra is the view from the bridge looking northwards with the river way below.
The bridge was completed as shown here in 1737 - but there had been previous bridges on the same site. According to some accounts, on her fateful flight from defeat at the Battle of Langside in 1568, Mary Queen of Scots crossed a wooden bridge here. Her entourage then destroyed it to deter pursuit by her enemies.
It's still known locally as Mary's Brig …………………….
