Golden Cherubs
Today's the day ........................ to spout
These two golden cherubs are part of the newly-furbished and recently restored, 140-year old, water fountain in the middle of Dumfries.
Originally unveiled in 1882, the fountain was made by the Sun Foundry, Glasgow and replaced an earlier version to commemorate the introduction of fresh water to Dumfries and Maxwelltown from nearby Lochrutton. The introduction of fresh water marked a turning point for the town and was a symbol of hope as the inhabitants emerged from the devastating cholera epidemics of 1832 and 1848.
And it was fairly gleaming in the sunshine this morning - and looking very smart indeed .................
