Stuff and Nonsense

The end of an era

Today, 4 of the 8 cooling towers at Fiddler’s Ferry Power station were due to be blown up and demolished between 8am and midday. It was bitterly cold and the fog made the whole experience a very underwhelming one. Not much could be seen because of the fog but the bang was VERY loud. It was all over in seconds, luckily around 9.30am so people didn’t have to wait around for 4 hours. This is obviously before they were blown up and the fog wasn’t quite so low!
It was opened in 1971 and has been a constant landmark for me for all of my life - it’s a bit sad to see it finally gone - at least half of it anyway. The other 4 towers will be demolished in due course and over the next 10 years the area will be redeveloped into new industrial and residential areas with the potential for a new school, GP surgery and shops.

Full disclosure - this shot was actually taken by a friend and sent to me.  I didn’t venture out this morning, instead choosing to watch the live feed that was available in the comfort of my living room.
