This morning Jen and I completed our walks along the Maitai River by going from Nelson to the river mouth at the marina. We sat in the sun and watched the boats launching and retrieving then walked back to the coffee cart. The blip is on the city side of the walkway. " This is the Taurapa, or waka/canoe sternpost, created by Maia Hegglun. The sculpture illustrates Māori/Polynesian exploration of the South Pacific Ocean and the discovery of Aotearoa/New Zealand. Mr Hegglun said at the time “The brief was to represent the topic of migration as it relates to all peoples. Its story reminds us that the only way we have a future is through kotahitanga (strength in unity). "
I think it is impressive against that blue sky. The red trees are young Pohutakawa.
