Town Arsenal

My blip today is linked to those I have taken over the past three days. All are listed arsenal buildings built for the Royal Guernsey Militia, to accommodate soldiers, artillery and horses as part of the island's defences

The Town Arsenal was constructed in 1850 and is a handsome granite building in the Gothic style. It was the home of the 1st Infantry Regiments and the Guernsey Artillery.

In 1882, Arsenals were built for the 2nd and 3rd Regiments at le Bordage (Baubigny), St. George (les Beaucamps), Les Naftiaux and St. Peter-in-the-Wood (Les Islets). These were all known as 'out-arsenals'.

Each Arsenal had quarters for the Permanent Staff, a spacious Drill Hall and Clothing Store, etc. The Town Arsenal also had Gun-sheds, Officer's Stables, Armourer's shops and Practice-rooms for the Bands.

Today, the Baubigny Arsenal is partially residential with the remaining space used as a store by the Guernsey Museums. It houses large agricultural items and equipment.

The Beaucamps Arsenal is now used as a school sports hall. The noonday gun fired at Castle Cornet originated from this arsenal where is stood on the parade ground for many years until being transferred in 1953.

Les Islets Arsenal is currently part residential and part storage. This arsenal was host to the very first West Show in September 1913. It was a great success with over 800 entries including 129 cattle. In 1917 the venue for the show changed to Les Caches, St Saviour's.

Les Naftiaux Arsenal has been demolished.

The Town Arsenal has been the home of the Guernsey Fire Brigade since 1935.
