Beauregard Steps

Its been quite a pleasant day today, the longest day of the year. Doesn't quite feel like summer though. At lunch time I went to preview a fine arts auction sale which is taking place tomorrow. I may pop back tomorrow and chance my hand at a few lots. This steep and scenic walkway was near to where the auction is taking place. I was wondering what the purpose of all the inset bricks in the wall could be.
