Building Sn3 and N Worlds

Doors and windows for the Dolores station

I started to construct the doors and windows for the station after a very nice vacation. I thought the construction of these was interesting, so thought I would blip them. The doors are an exact layering of four parts, one atop the others. There is the outer door, then a light colored inner door, then a back panel, and finally the piece that holds the door in place. The parts are printed on very thin wood that has an adhesive backing. Peal off the paper and you stick the parts together, creating a three layer door with scale depth. The fourth piece is stuck on the back with the adhesive towards the front. This assembly is placed inside the building frame in the proper door opening and the adhesive holds the door in place. The parts are laser cut to an exact size - I mean like within 1000's of an inch so the fit is perfect. The last step will be to install "glass" - very thin plastic - on the back. I could have done that before installing the door but I need to weather the entire building with my airbrush and did not want to get paint on the glass. However, doing the glass later will be a royal pain.

The windows go together in a similar fashion, with both parts of the double hung windows separate. This allows a window to be modeled open. I will do that on the second floor and create a room behind inside the model for my person to stand looking out the window. Maybe some drapes blowing out as well.

The small straight pieces next to the door parts in the blip are the inner door frames. Also self adhesive backed. I painted the colors when all the parts were on their carrying sheets - depot brown and beige. First a coat of cheap-o WalMart spray paint (solvent based to prevent warping), then a coat o water based final color.

The final part to attach is the outside trim. The door in the building is complete with that trim.

OK - now just 20 more to go.
