Weatherboard nine
Australia once (5 years ago) had a deputy prime minister who, in his retirement speech, said he had been proud to represent people of the 'weatherboard nine'. Or that's the way many journalists heard it. It turned out he was referring to a house-building style using timber walls (weatherboard) and corrugated iron roofing. I thought of that this morning, in Kangaroo Point, Brisbane, looking at this gloriously rusty weatherboard nine building.
