The Fish That Never Swam
Wander round Glasgow and everywhere on the sandstone buildings is this coat of arms. Rather wonderful.
The tree that never grew
The bird that never flew
The fish that never swam
The bell that never rang
Apparently the Clyde crossing (where squinty bridge is now) used to be awash with salmon. A queen had an affair with a knight and gave him her ring. He lost it in a river and it was eaten by a salmon. When the king demanded the ring back the queen implored a holy man to retrieve it and St. Mungo caught the salmon cut it open and the ring (and presumably domestic peace) were restored. The salmon in the coat of arms always has a ring in it's nose.
