Native American glass

Tuesday January 9
It was a truly miserable day weather-wise today, with a front moving across, stretching from Florida in the south all the way up to the Canadian border. It was grey, with gusty winds and rain virtually all day, at times heavy, sometimes reducing to a drizzle, but never really stopping. However, despite that, we had a good day. I was out in the morning at Knitting group - a few less than usual, but there were still seven of us. Most of us were in the middle of something, so there were only three items to bless. I left a few minutes early, so I could get home for 11.30, where Roger was waiting for me with some coffee in a travel mug, and we drove downtown to Music Live at lunch at Christ Church Cathedral - it was mainly piano today with a couple of pieces for piano and saxophone to round off the program. The music was a mix of contemporary styles, including some jazz. One of the pieces was really neat - a sort of meditative piece with bird song in the background, which he had recorded on his phone, and he laid the phone inside the piano on the sound board. It was very soothing and effective.
After that, we drove to the Cincinnati Art Museum to see their special exhibition, “Clearly Indigenous: Native Visions reimagined in glass”, featuring a broad range of contemporary Native American and Indigenous Pacific-Rim artists working in glass. The exhibit includes about 120 glass objects created by 29 Native American artists, four Pacific airmen artists from New Zealand and Australia, as well as a few by the leading glass artist, Dale Chihuly, who first introduced glass art to Indian country. It was a wonderful exhibition, so colourful, varied and creative, and letting their culture shine through. There was also a video to watch, featuring short interviews with some of the artists as well as some footage of the creative process.
Feeling so blessed this evening to have access to all this wonderful music and art.
