World Music Day - Derry/Londonderry

Derry-Londonderry UK City of culture celebrated the longest day by having music playing from dawn until dusk. They started at 4.30am with a choir followed by hot air balloons being released into the air emanating musical sounds. I have to add that I didn't see these two parts - however later in the day the city came alive with buskers on every nook and cranny presenting their own version of music. I passed these two strangely odd guys immediately after a Spanish guitarist with two flamenco dancers. Stages were set up in different locations to continue the music into the wee small hours. The Taste of Fleadh stage, set up outside the Guildhall, kicked off with the Scottish Band Rua.

After all the troubles that this city has gone through it was great to experience a sense of community and vibrancy, brought together by culture. Ebrington Barracks - attacked during the troubles - is being transformed into a culture hub, holding the culture offices and later this year, for the first time outside England, the Turner prize shortlist. Easily accessed now by the recently built 'Peace Bridge

They still have 6-months of their programme left - so well worth a visit. Well done Derry-Londonderry
