Scallop

NY Backblip 4

A lovely day!

First things first - after a substantial breakfast at the hotel, we walked up the hill past St Peter & St Paul Church (3rd extra) to the Co-op for a couple of essentials that we forgot to bring with us. Then back down to the main street for a quick browse around the shops, and to buy a couple of T-shirts for MrM, as he'd forgotten to pack any spares. Luckily he found some rather nice ones in a sale!

After dropping off our purchases back at the hotel, we spent the rest of the day walking. First, south along the path by the sea as far as the sign for Orford Ness Nature reserve, after which we could go no further - access is only by ferry from Orford Quay. Walking back we stopped to watch a couple of seals swimming quite close to the shore.

The only tea shop that appeared to be open in Aldeburgh was absolutely packed, so we went back to the hotel and had coffee in the lounge before setting out again, to walk towards Thorpeness. Along the way is Scallop, a sculpture by Maggi Hambling. Cut into its upper edge are the words 'I hear those voices that will not be drowned', a line from Benjamin Britten's opera Peter Grimes. Two more views of Scallop in extras. The side view, taken at a distance at dusk, looked (to MrM and I) like two people clinging to a ship's mast, though whether or not  that's intentional we have no idea. It's an amazing work, and worth seeking out if you're in the area.

In the evening a lovely Italian meal.
