Bogaña Bridge
Went off to Villanueva in Spain on a fruitless search for a bed frame for Mike to build into the North Wing - the shop was like something out of another century, as was the woman womanning it.
Spur of moment decided to investigate a walk we´ve seen signposted on the road to Badajoz. Absolutely gorgeous - several kms through dehesa (montado in Portugal) - open grassland scattered with holm and cork oaks. Saw several lots of Iberian black pigs and some cattle, but not a sign of any human being.
And then an abandoned railway station with the most amazing brickwork, and the remains of a massive bridge, and then alongside the Alcarrache River (which eventually runs into our Lake) until this gorgeous bridge (built around 1500), with eight arches. All this in the middle of nowhere - the only sound, trickling water and insects. Mike saw a kingfisher from the top of the bridge, lucky thing.
The crowning moment was turning around as we were leaving, the sun suddenly breaking through the clouds and illuminating the underside of the arches. That´s my main, with two extras.
Gratefuls:
- getting a good walk in (we were both aching by the end, definitely need to walk more!)
- discovering a new place of beauty so near us, and having time to walk it
- food at home, we were "starving" by the end, but the guy at the biggest place in Villanueva said he couldn´t possibly do us any food until 9pm
And, in honour of Martin Luther King day, a quote of his from December 1963:
We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.
