Macbeth

An outing tonight to an exhibition hall at Ingliston for a performance of Macbeth. Ralph Fiennes in the lead role and Indira Valma as Lady Macbeth. Each brought an intensity to the role with Ralph Fiennes displaying a middle aged troubled soul. The rest of the cast were great too.

We really enjoyed the production with sounds of overhead jets, explosions and dripping blood.

It’s been over 30 years I think since I last saw a theatre production: Edinburgh Festival in the mid-1980s. It was a Japanese production in kimonos with cherry blossom falling to the ground to the sound of Fauré’s requiem. A far remove from tonight’s combat wearing troup.

The tone was set as we moved towards our seats walking past wrecked cars on fire, rubble and rubbish. Smoke filling the air. Lightning and sombre music.

I was struck by how so many well known phrases peppered the play from the outset. They were familiar and not just because I studied the play at school.

A great night and lovely to catch up with the son of friends who has a role in the production team.
