DAY NINETEEN (Adelaide)
A VERY long day! Up at 5.30am, along the bus station (thankfully only a couple of blocks) for 6.30 and then a two hour drive to Cape Jervis to take the (40 minute) ferry to Kangaroo Island to begin our day's adventure. It was quite fun, though not quite what I'd (we'd) expected. Kangaroo Island is the third largest island in Australia - ie very very big! And so the distances we travelled were far. As JR said - 'A long way to go for not much reward...'
Yes, we saw a koala, away up high in a gum tree.
Yes, we saw some wallabies under a few trees at some distance away.
We saw plenty of sea lions.
We fed a wallaby on a farm.
We held a baby magpie called 'Spud'.
We tasted different honeys (the island has the only purebred Ligurian bees left in the world)
We looked at various eucalyptus products.
We had a picnic lunch in a tent.
We had morning coffee and lamingtons at a beach.
Our driver, called 'Sparkles' did well. It was a long day of driving for her. And then we had to get the 7pm ferry back to the mainland, followed by a two hour bus drive... home and in bed just before 11pm.
However, it was quite a fun day, as we met some nice people. Especially a couple of guys on an extended three month holiday. On our first walk down a hill to look at some wallabies under a tree, I skidded a wee bit on the rubble. One of the charming chaps immediately offered his arm, and that was it - he was there every time I needed him, and even if I didn't. Turns out, he's from Edinburgh, his mum still lives there.
A much more relaxing day planned for tomorrow...
