Diary of an Edinburgher

By LadyMarchmont

Holocaust Memorial Day. Watched quite a bit of the coverage. When we were in Krakow a while ago, we decided not to go and visit Auschwitz - it would be too upsetting.

We popped round to our local hostelry for lunch, lured by the 50% off offer. But this time I read the small print and booked it carefully, using the code.

And it was mobbed! Dogs allowed, which is great, and we even were seated in the restaurant not the pub part. The muzak was abominable - as expected. But the food was GREAT! I had the best fish and chips I’ve had for a while. A HUGE piece of fish that I could not finish. The big fat hot crispy chips were superb.

So I had a chunk of fish to take home. What to do with it? JR suggested fish cakes. Good idea. Simple enough, you’d think, but it didn’t turn out well. It was looking promisingly patty-like, after I’d added the mashed spuds, when I read to add an egg. Well, it then turned into a slop. No way could I make patties. I had to put it in a dish, so then it didn’t fit into the already heated air fryer. I eventually baked it in the oven. I should mention that I made my own (burnt toast) breadcrumbs…

It was edible.

The pub has an amazing floor made up thousands of dimes! What a labour of love. (Extra too).
