Professor Akhter and her fistula surgical team

In developing countries, obstructed and prolonged labour frequently results in obstetric fistula (a tear in the birth canal). Without skilled surgical repair, women may remain incontinent, in pain and face life-threatening infections.

This is Professor Akhter (Prof. of Gynaecology) with her team. IMPACT Bangladesh stage specialist 'Surgical Camps' which provide life-transforming operations for women damaged by fistula.

Parvina was 19 when she delivered a still-born baby after days in labour. She was also left with a fistula (tear); 'My life changed. I started to leak urine. I could not perform my chores or take care of my children. It was shameful when neighbours laughed at me and my husband wanted a divorce'.

Had Parvina been transferred to hospital at the first signs of difficulty, things could have been different for her and her baby. Thanks to Professor Akhter and her team, Parvina is on the road to recovery. IMPACT also trains Traditional Birth Attendants in the safe management of pregnancies and deliveries.
