Silent parade of school buses
In front of the church, just before the funeral, as the pall bearers stood just inside with the family massed behind the casket, all the school buses drove silently down the street, paying respect to Maria, who is the manager of school buses for the region. It was a complete surprise to Maria, who was standing behind her husband's casket in the doorway. She felt faint and someone brought her a chair.
The first extra is Juan's three grandchildren as the casket is about to leave for the crematorium after the funeral. Seth is comforting Bella and Evan, and to their right is Jezebel, Cristina's sister's only child, and beside her, her paternal grandmother, Marta.
The second extra is Cristina's photo of Seth and me at the large lunch at the community center after the funeral. Mirror images? People brought food from home: flautas, tacos, beans and rice, salsas, enchiladas, guacamole, chimichangas, and more. There were also 35 pizzas ordered from the local pizza shop. About 200 people joined us to eat, swap stories, and offer hugs and consolation to the family.
