Devils’s bridge- Antigua
Why the name? I ask our guide.
This is where slaves committed mass suicides ,he said, because of working conditions on the sugar plantations.
Some thought they could swim back to Africa.
The official tourist story is that this is an area of outstanding natural beauty with blowholes causing sea to surge- leading to local legends it was the devil wanting more souls. ( A search on the internet revealed the full story).
See extra photo for the sign that greets visitors to Devil's bridge. There is no further explanation.
