Gatehouse of Fleet

Today's the day ........................ for town planning

Since the enlightened laird James Murray of Broughton and Cally (1727-99) planned the town and encouraged the development of its industries, the main streets of Gatehouse of Fleet, Galloway have changed little physically.

The above shows some of the Murray Arms Hotel, with the Clock Tower to the side.  Originally a Posting Inn, the Murray Arms dates back to 1760, It was visited by Robert Burns in 1793 and is reputed to be where he wrote 'Scots Wha Hae'.  The Clock Tower was built of granite blocks in 1871, at a cost of about £300 which was raised by the people of the burgh and surrounding district.

The extra is a postcard from the 1960s taken from a little further along Ann Street with the Murray Arms and the Clock Tower on the left.  The building with the white gable end and roof in the middle is the 'Gaithouse', reputed to be the oldest building in the town.

It's a fascinating little place with a rich and interesting history. ...............
