Orchids after Hours
This evening, for a slightly belated birthday treat, Martin took me to Kew Gardens, where the annual Orchids festival is taking place this month. Tonight, and over the next couple of weekends, the gardens are open from 6-10 pm so visitors can see the orchids and other plants in the Princess Of Wales conservatory, after hours. The displays were skillfully illuminated for dramatic effect, and there was live music played by a Malagasy band and traditional Malagasy food and cocktails on offer, too.
Two extras show the spectacular displays, in and around, the pond with crafted lemurs, chameleons, and a snake climbing on the two entwined baobab trees, and bats flying about. The individual orchids were stunning, and amazingly varied. Madagascar has so many endemic plants and animals, which I think makes this exhibition particularly fascinating.
The final extra shows three carefully crafted ring tailed lemurs, another unique Malagasy species, of course!
Definitely worth staying up for!
