Dinner and a movie night
Tonight the three of us went out for dinner and a movie at the Esquire theater in Clifton's gaslight district. As you can see, the Esquire is a small, older theater, which carries independent and foreign films. Their tickets are cheaper than the big multi-screen theaters you find at the malls, and on a Wednesday night, when you get your movie tickets they give you a voucher for 20% off at any of four or five restaurants nearby. The area is close to the University of Cincinnati, so can be quite crowded during the school year, but over the summer is quieter. The area around is full of older housing of varying styles, including some wonderful old mansions, and the area is lit by old gaslights - hence the name. We had a great dinner at a restaurant just around the corner from the theater - we were quite surprised to find the restaurant full, so we ended up eating at the bar. I guess the last time we went there, we saw the movie first and ate afterwards, so it was quite late and the restaurant was almost empty. The movie we saw was the Soloist - quite a powerful movie. It was a great evening.
When we got back home however, we got a shock when Roger read his email to find a friend of ours from church (he sings with us in the choir) had lost his wife suddenly. We had just seen him last night at the concert at church, and he was his usual upbeat, jovial self, and now his life has been turned upside down. It really gives you a jolt and reminds you to make the most of each day. Our prayers go out to him and his daughter.
