Crushing

Back on farm in Glen Loy today running a workshop on bracken control. The mountain at the back still with snow on is Ben Nevis.

This is a bracken crusher in action, sometimes called a square roller. It does not cut the bracken but crushes the stem at several different points. This allows the stem to bleed and drain the plant of energy. If you keep doing this twice a year for several years you will reduce the vigour of your bracken.

Smaller bracken will allow grasses and other plants to grow beneath it and in this way it improves the biodiversity.

Straight back to school prize giving, I am very pleased how my eldest has settled into High School and managed to get an award this year. Now I need a big glass of wine to celebrate!
