BIG FELLA, HIS DOG PLUS ONE
A good morning. Hubby's foot was a little painful today so we decided to have a fairly quiet morning.
We just drove up to Silloth on the Solway Coast, partly as I wanted to see the Solway Coast and partly to see the Big Fella statue.
We got up there no problem. Silloth is a quiet place, not a lot going on, at this time of the year anyway, but does have attractive very wide streets, a large park and gardens called Silloth Green. It also has cobbled roads as the main roads, so you need to keep your false teeth well and truly glued in (not that I have any, yet).
We went into Mrs Miller's tea rooms for coffee and a brunch. It's an attractive place, coffee good and serves a good range of brunches, lunches, snacks, cakes etc It is also unique in that is set up to the memory of Kathleen Ferrier. Kathleen Ferrier was a very well known classical singer of the 1930s and 1940s I think. She was born in Higher Walton near Preston, Lancs but lived in Silloth when she married and from there she entered the Carlisle Festival and won and then became world famous. I believe one of her famous songs was "Blow the Wind Southerly". I have to confess, I have heard of her but did not know much about her.
Everywhere in the cafe is dedicated to her including a sort of mural of her life.
After that we walked along the Prom but the views over the Solway to Scotland were very hazy and it was barely discernible. We went to see the Big Fella sculpture. It is very impressive.
We then drove back. Google Maps bought us back a different way via Allonby, which is quite a pleasant drive However she who must be obeyed on Google Maps also took us down some very narrow roads - I guess going the most straight route rather than the best roads!!! Interesting though.
I took the photo of Hubby next to the Big Fella so you can see the scale - Hubby is 6'2"!!! In extras; is me cuddling the dog of course, I'm 5'2" and a bit!!!
All in all a pleasant couple of hours, quite breezy but still the sun was was shining - so much so you couldn't see where you were walking, but then heh it was shining and and the skies were blue - yeah!!!
