Florida Wolf Spider
Fletcher spotted this Wolf Spider on the edge of a street we walk during our journey each morning. It was beautifully camouflaged and I would have missed it without his help. Wolf spiders are members of the very diverse Lycosidae family from the Ancient Greek 'lukos' or 'wolf'. With their eight eyes, they have great eyesight and are ferocious hunters. The 1.5 " spiders hunt alone and usually don't spin webs. Sometimes they even chase their prey a short distance. They rarely bite humans and then only if continually provoked. Their bite causes swelling, mild pain and itching. (note to self: don't pick up Wolf Spiders). I tried to convince her to leave the street, but she kept trying to tell me that she just wanted to get to the other side! Check the *extra for another view.
