Fallen but still alive

Lovely walk in the morning in Leigh Woods, just outside Bristol, with my friend C and her elderly but very playful dog. We were so pleased with this beautiful tree, fallen, partially covered in moss, with most of its roots upended, but definitely still alive, and new green leaves opening.
At lunchtime I went to the singing group - we are still working on the Bill Withers song Lean on Me. Afterwards, as it was the end of term, we sat in the garden beside the apple trees which we wassailed in January, and had some cake.  The trees were showing some signs of opening leaves and blossom, but are  behind the totally unwassailed tree in my garden. As I was leaving I watched with fascination a clever pigeon acting a bit like a hummingbird in order to feast at the seed feeder intended for small birds.
In the evening I watched Ken Loach’s film The Old Oak - about a village in County Durham - a deprived former mining village - into which a group of Syrian refugees are brought to live.  Some villagers are intensely racist and unwelcoming, others can see what they have in common with the refugees, and bonds are formed. As ever with Ken Loach it’s complex, tragic, hopeful, and so well done.  5 stars from me.
