View over Bushfield
I had a rather leisurely day, spent mostly indoors as it was still quite windy and chilly outside. However, we went for a walk late afternoon. This view is looking over Bushfield Down, towards Winchester cathedral, with a train heading southwards towards Shawford and Southampton. The photo was taken from an avenue of beech trees, shown in the extra, situated on a ridge.
As we walked along this avenue we met a friendly and cheerful chap who was collecting fallen branches to use as firewood. He told us he has been living up there, off -grid, in a hut, in the adjacent ruins of the old army camp, for the past couple of years! When I asked where he gets water he said he goes to the nearest garage, in St Cross ( it's at least half a mile away). We didn't detain him for long as he needed to get his fire going before darkness fell but, afterwards, I thought of so many other questions I wished I had asked him. We'll have to return and look him up again! (He had invited us to call anytime.) What did come across, though, was how content he seemed to be with his minimalist lifestyle.
