A day at the museums
A very rainy day, but that didn't matter much, as we had planned to spend it visiting the museums Vapriikki and Werstas in Tampere anyway. We started with the Manserock exhibition in Vapriikki (*) and continued to the Finnish Nature Photo of the Year and Finlayson factory history (**) before moving to the opposite side of the rapids for delicious pizzas at Il Siciliano and the visit to Werstas.
In Werstas, we headed first to the exhibition of Dorothea Lange's photos of the 1930's depression in the USA (***) and then had a look at the permanent exhibitions about working class history, industrial history and steam engines. Or perhaps I should say steam engine, as there's just one, but not just any steam engine. It's a 1899 Sulzer with 1650 hp, the largest steam engine ever used in a factory in Finland. In the extra you can see how big the flywheel looks compared to Jussi. A beautiful piece of engineering.
*) I must be old, when the music of my youth is museum stuff!
**)Vapriikki is located in the former Tampella factory across the rapids from Werstas, located in the Finlayson factory
***) Including a large print of "Migrant Mother", which I was looking forward to seeing
