Green & Black Poison Dart Frog, Costa Rica
We left Panama behind crossing into Costa Rica at the Sixaola border. It involved getting our passports stamped to exit Panama, walking across a very long bridge and then getting stamped into Costa Rica - the first of a series of stamps!
The rain came down in occasional strong torrents on the journey here. We stopped at a roadside ‘soda’ for traditional Costa Rican lunch, casado - very tasty. This was the first time I tried fried plantain a staple of the region. It tastes just like bananas but must be cooked, it can't be eaten raw.
We had our first venture out into the ‘jungle’ and heard before we saw howler monkeys! Very loud indeed! We were on the look out for two types of tiny frog. The green and black poison dart frog is only an inch big - the very small amount of poison the frog has is enough to make a human heart stop beating!!
We also saw the tiny red Golfodulcean Poison Frog which is endangered. Its skin is highly toxic.
