Hordes

.... and hordes ..... and hordes of people.  We chose a disturbingly expensive tour of the Colosseum which included the newly opened under ground area, and it was a very wise choice  The group was small, and we saw everything we needed to see.  

After the tour was over we did try to go through the museum on the first floor, but it was jam packed with people so we escaped to the nearest icecream shop.
