Happy Moments

In the middle of nowhere

Actually, it’s only about 10 minutes drive from Saltburn AND depending what you believe on the internet, it is probably the smallest church in Britain!! (Definitely the second smallest, depends if you count the sticky out buttress apparently)

We drove by a few days ago, and Callum kindly agreed to take me back there today even though the garden centre we went to was in the opposite direction.

I walked all round and took different angles, but this shot shows most of the ‘nowhere’ part about it.

Seemingly it was built in the 12th century. But a 9th century fragment of cross was found nearby, raising the possibility of a much older structure on or near the present site.

It’s called St Andrew Old Church, it’s just outside the village of Upleatham and is now under the wing of the National Churches Trust, grade 2 * listed and - unsurprisingly - unused as it was replaced by the newer St Andrew church nearer to the village. [the newer church is now a private home].

I think it’s a pretty good find for Wide Wednesday church or chapel :-)
