The Gansey Girl

The weather forecast for home - more gloomy grey. The forecast for the east coast - cold but sunny. So we headed east to Bridlington, a 2-hour drive away, and it proved to be a grand day out!

First a walk all around the harbour, watching boats coming in and going out, and we caught sight of three traditional cobles sailing into the distance. We paused to look at 'The Gansey Girl', a statue by Stephen Carvill - "A young woman waiting for her loved one to return from the sea; she is knitting a traditional fisherman's 'gansey' to keep him warm".

Next we walked to the Old Town, a little further than anticipated, but worth it - some lovely old buildings, and interesting shops. Then back in to the centre for fish & chips (a colleague had recommended a particular shop to MrM), before a short walk on the beach (first two extras). I love being by the sea...

Before driving home, we decided to go to Flamborough Head (3rd extra), where we stopped very briefly. Already planning to go back there.

On the way home, I noticed that a 'monolith' was marked on the map. We decided to investigate, and I'm glad we did. It's in the churchyard at Rudston, just off the main road, and it would have been very easy to pass it by. Apparently the Rudston Monolith (4th and 5th extras) is the tallest standing stone in Britain. The extra with the church may be a technically rubbish photo, but it's nicely 'atmospheric'!
