Heading south
We woke before 6am after a fitful night's sleep. Showers, breakfast, packing and the usual checking procedures followed, including more time wasted looking unsuccessfully for the extra bike wire! All ready at last, we set off just before 10 o'clock. It was drizzling and cool to begin with but brightened and warmed considerably as we headed west and south. We don't head to England that often and have never before been east of the A1 south of the Humber. So, the journey after Newark was particularly interesting across the flat fens of Lincolnshire to King's Lynn and beyond, particularly in late evening sunlight.
We had estimated a journey time of 10 hours, allowing for stops and some traffic delays and made it to our destination on schedule just before 8pm. Apart from a fairly lengthy hold up on the A66, the journey was fine: the car performed well and the bikes on top seemed none the worse of their 400 mile diagonal excursion across the UK.
The accommodation more than met our expectations - in a prime location within a classy little development in the grounds of an old manor house on the edge of a small village. A deck overlooks a weir on a stream that runs alongside the chalet, which is spacious, open plan and finished to a very high standard. Having decanted from the car, we were ready for a beer and some food. It was but a 5 minute walk to the village pub and we were fortunate to make it before they stopped serving at 8.30. Thereafter, we crashed out, happy to be here and looking forward to our week in Norfolk.
