Not A Lot Of People Know This !!!
Godfrey Washington was a great uncle to George Washington the first U.S. President. He was appointed Fellow of Peterhouse College, Cambridge, by the Lord Bishop of Ely on 8th April 1693, at the age of 22. He became the Vicar of Little St Mary's church, Cambridge, where this memorial is sited just inside the door on the left, and he is buried there. The Washington family Coat-of-Arms is a Black Eagle atop a shield of Red Stars and Stripes. It is from this coat-of-arms that the Stars and Stripes of the U.S. National Flag and the Black Eagle are said to derive. I found this out a few years ago when showing some relatives from America around. I did my homework before they arrived and they were so pleased to see it. I am surprised that it is not mentioned on the guide for the tourists from the U.S.A. I'm sure they would be interested, especially when they pass the church which is near to the Fitzwilliam Museum.
