Green winged
We took the ferry from Southampton to Cowes this morning to spend a couple of days on the Isle of Wight. We stopped at Osborne House for a walk in the extensive grounds of what was Queen Victoria's house/palace.
There was an impressive, huge, lawn of Green -winged orchids (Anacamptis morio) stretching away from the house, towards the beach. The first extra shows this meadow, while the main shows a close-up of one flower spike. Each flower has a pair of lateral sepals with prominent green veins, extending laterally, which gives the orchid its name.
The second extra shows the formal terrace gardens beside the house.
