A Griffon Vulture??
We woke up to some sunshine over the mountains. Wonderful!
After breakfast we walked around the farm which has Asturian breeds of sheep and cows as well as horses . There were some really interesting plants as there is a Mediterranean climate here despite it being high up . We spotted an unusual citrus fruit called Buddha’s Fingers as well as oranges . They make cider here, a local produce. There’s also a pottery and they have a go at essential oils .
Later we braved the windy roads to Canga de Onís with its medieval bridge . Then toCovadonga, a centre of pilgrimage with lots of history relating to the Princes of Asturias. We had a an interesting talk with the keeper of the museum who explained the catholic history of the cave and its relics ! The jewelled headdress/ crown for the Virgin Mary was astonishing .
Finally we followed a precipitous mountain road towards Covadonga lakes but only made it half way as the cloud descended! At the Mirador de Raine we spout his griffon vulture .
Lots of unusual wildflowers and birds about .
