“Our city of peace and justice’
This afternoon we took a boat trip around The Hague, following a canal system that was built in the 17th century for protection. This was a gentle journey along the waterways, with a local lady explaining what we could see, (as well as reminding us to mind our heads as we went under unbelievably low bridges!) The Hague is the Dutch seat of government so there are many buildings housing the various ministries, but we were also reminded that The Hague is known globally as the international city of peace and justice, with countries gathering to foster peace through justice, rather than through war and conflict. It does seem to us to be a peaceful city, with light traffic, most people getting around by bicycle or tram or on foot.
In the morning of course, we made our way to The Mauritshuis, the excellent museum, where I found the paintings I had been hoping to see - Vermeer’s ‘View of Delft’ and ‘Girl with the Pearl Earring’ and Fabritius’ ‘Goldfinch’ - see extras. Wonderful to be able look at the actual paintings, after seeing them so often in illustrations. Beautifully displayed and, as it wasn’t busy, it was possible to have them to oneself. I’m happy.
Delft tomorrow - by tram. Love these trams.
