Independence Day
Today is Malawi's Independence day! We became independent from British rule on July 6th 1964. We then had a life President 'Ngwazi Hastings Kamuzu Banda who controlled the people of this nation for the next 30 years.
Today, I was at an Early Years end of year celebration which just happened to fall on Independence day.
All the schools close here on 12th July for the long holiday! At the celebration there was a wonderful drama by the children for Independence day. We had Ngwazi Kamuzu Banda who you see in the picture with his characteristic fly whisk in his hand, we had the next president Bakili Muluzi, we had our last President Bingu Wa Mutharika and we had the present president Joyce Banda.
I took this picture of the real Kamuzu Banda on the cloth of the ladies dancing with the child representative of Kamuzu Banda. It was a fun sketch.
In Africa ,we have ladies who follow the presidents and dance for them and we had the other children dressed in traditional wear following the presidents dancing - it was a wonderful celebration.
Because the 6th of July is on a Saturday we have Monday off which is great!! Hope you all had a good Saturday too!
