Life through the lens...

The Holy Well.

Bit of mixed weather. Warm when the sun is out but so much cooler when the rain comes.

The plumber came this morning to continue putting the boiler in, so we decided to do a supermarket shop at Sainsbury’s in Brighouse. Then called at a butchers in Hipperholme which has recently moved into new larger premises. Butchers/ Deli now. Doesn’t have the same atmosphere. Used to be a very old fashioned butchers. The gentleman that had it has retired and young ones have taken over.
However must say their sausage rolls are the best I have tasted.

We drove back the county way through Priestley Green. One of my favourite little hamlets.

MrC stopped the car so that I could take some photos.

Lister’s Well , or often called Holy Well, is set into the pavement.
In 1904 it was believed to “ possess magic cures for all who drank it’s crystal waters, and pilgrimages were made to it”.
I’m afraid I won’t be drinking it’s water!
The fact that it has been retained as part of the structure of the pavement and not tarmacked over suggests that some memory of its importance survived.
Behind the well stands the Sister’s House.
Dating back to 1630 and grade two listed.
Said to be owned by the Appleyard sisters.
One of the houses has just been sold for £425,000.
