Gertrude Jekyll
Today's the day ...................... for the name of the rose
This is the first flower to open on my new David Austin rose, Gertrude Jekyll - bought a couple of years ago as a present to myself.
Just in case you don't know, David C. H. Austin (1926 – 2018) was an award-winning English rose breeder, nursery owner and writer from Shropshire. His roses are exquisite and any rose-lover will have at least one (if not several) of his in their collection. Apparently Getrude Jekyll came about as a result of a union between the Wife of Bath and the Comte de Chambord ! It is, of course, named in honour of the famous British writer and garden designer, Gertrude Jekyll (1843–1932).
Not surprisingly (because it has the most beautiful scent), it is one of the most popular of the David Austin's English roses. It was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit in 2012 ......................
